Deciding between the ACT and the Digital SAT can feel overwhelming. Both are widely accepted for college admissions, but their formats, content, and pacing cater to different types of students. The bottom line? Take the test YOU perform best in after some preparation.

Key Differences Between the ACT vs. Digital SAT

Format and Timing

The ACT is a traditional paper-and-pencil test, while the SAT has transitioned to a digital format. The digital SAT adapts to your performance, offering a unique experience tailored to each test-taker.

ACT: 4 sections—English, Math, Reading, and Science—with an optional Writing section. The total time is 2 hours and 55 minutes (plus 40 minutes for Writing).
Digital SAT: 2 modules each for Reading/Writing and Math, totaling 2 hours and 14 minutes.
- The digital SAT also has write-in answers for the math section -- which means you can't leverage process of elimination.

What this means for you: If you prefer a consistent, linear test-taking experience, the ACT might be better. You may also consider the ACT if you prefer having more practice material available in the format of the test (pen & paper) and if you dislike the write-in portions for math. If you’re comfortable with technology and adaptive testing, consider the SAT.

Content Focus

While both tests cover similar core subjects, the emphasis differs:

ACT Math includes some geometry and a very few number of trigonometry questions, while SAT Math focuses on algebra and problem-solving. The SAT tends to be a little 'trickier' but it doesn't usually test as high a level. Neither test really tests beyond Algebra II.
Reading and Writing on the digital SAT is shorter and more concise compared to the ACT’s lengthy reading passages. The SAT's questions get harder as they go; the ACT questions do not. You wind up reading about the same amount - but on the ACT, many questions focus on one passage; on the SAT, it's a smorgasbord.
That Science Section doesn't exist on the SAT... sort of. The ACT has an entire science section of the test, but (as I tell my students)... it isn't really science. It's basically more reading, but with some graphs / charts / tables, which the SAT actually does incorporate too. So.. kind of a wash!

Pro Tip: Students who excel in reading comprehension under tight time constraints may prefer the ACT. On the other hand, the SAT suits those who do better with shorter, focused tasks.
